You’ll need

  • Espresso machine
  • Grinder
  • Scales
  • Timer
  • Mug
  • A cracking bag of coffee
  1. For one shot, weigh out and then grind 16g of coffee into the basket of the portafilter. Give the side of the basket a couple of taps to level the coffee, wiping away any grinds on the rim.
  2. Place the portafilter against the edge of a sturdy work surface and press a tamper onto the coffee grounds in the basket to level the coffee bed.
  3. Lock the portafilter in place in the machine and place a cup under the spouts, then press the brew button on the machine.Stop the machine after around 25 seconds.
  4. Serve the espresso shot straight as espresso, topped up with hot water to make a long black or lavished with steamed milk for a flat white.
